It is of no surprise to most that international visitors make up a majority portion of those visiting our beautiful Coastal and Otway Region and are an intergral part of out ecconomy. Below is a summary of information sourced from the Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism Pty Ltd.’s recently published November newsletter (https://www.greatoceanroadtourism.org.au/) regarding International visitors to the state;


According to research conducted by Tourism Research Australia, almost one quarter (23% or 613,800) of total international overnight visitors to Victoria is accounted for by those visiting relatives or friends who live in Australia, and it is estimated that approximatley 20% (112,700) of all Chinese visitors to the state are traveling for this purpose.

The chart below gives you a clear understanding of the research findings

TRA’s research results for ‘Visiting Family and Relatives’ in the China and India Markets study found both Chinese visitors and hosts:

  • Found Australia to be welcoming of migrants and to foster a warm, multi-cultural environment
  • Were surprised Melbourne was not as cosmopolitan as they had expected, buildings were old-fashioned
  • Were most likely to visit regional Victoiran destinations of the Great Ocean Road,  Phillip Island and the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges when travelling outside the capital city.
